There was potato salad and ham and fresh bread. Mr Ashton-Smith had a tray of pickles which he’d made himself. They were a bit unusual: turnip and anchovy, onion and grape, or nettle.

‘Have a try, Tilly. They’re my secret recipes.’

‘You don’t have to,’ said Brook teasingly. ‘No one likes Dad’s pickles… except Doug!’

‘So,’ said Mrs Ashton-Smith, offering round a plate of hard-boiled eggs. ‘It’s no coincidence that Brook loves riding, since he’s grown up around horses. What about you, Tilly? Are your family as horse-mad as us?’

‘No,’ said Tilly. ‘My mum prefers ice-skating, my brother likes football and my dad thinks horses are a bit scary! They’re all keen for me to ride, but they have no experience themselves.’

‘So it’s a love and talent that you’ve obviously inherited. Your blood relatives must have had a natural way with horses.’

‘You’ll have to find out more about them,’ said Mr Ashton-Smith. ‘Research your family tree, that sort of thing.’

Tilly and Brook glanced at each other. They were both thinking the same thing. The thought of finding out more about the mysterious woman who was their birth mother was tantalising.
